Fiorentina climbed to fourth in the Serie A standings after beating Champions League rivals AS Roma 4-1 at Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The hosts took the lead with the first chance of the game when defender Juan Vargas beat goalkeeper Arthur with a low long-range shot in the sixth minute.

Alberto Gilardino doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half when he headed in Franco Semioli's cross at the near post.

Roma's task was then toughened when David Pizarro was handed his marching orders after clashing with Semioli.

The Viola punished Roma almost immediately with Gilardino scoring his second of the night with a low right-footed shot on 67 minutes.

Substitute Massimo Gobbi added the fourth in the 73rd minute before Júlio Baptista scored a consolation for the visitors four minutes from time.
