Sporting director Predrag "Pedja" Mijatović has left Real Madrid by mutual consent a year before his contract.

The Spanish giants announced the decision on their official website and stated that the move came after talks had been concluded, with both parties agreeing to the decision.

"The Real Madrid board of directors have reached a mutual agreement with the the club's sporting director, Pedja Mijatović, that his contract that was to run until 2010, would be rescinded today," the statement read.

"The board would like to extend its sincere gratitude for the work carried out by Pedja Mijatović during the past three seasons as the team has won two league titles and the Spanish SuperCopa, as well as being runners-up this season, under his guidance.

"Also, Real Madrid and the board would like to wish Mr Mijatović good luck in both his personal and professional life."

Mijatović, who scored the winner for Los Blancos in the 1998 Champions League final against Juventus, took up the role of Real sporting director in summer 2006, but his future has been in doubt since Ramón Calderón's exit earlier this year.

Calderon stepped down from his position as president in February this year after a vote-rigging scandal at the club's annual assembly.
