Malaysian consortium tables £80m bid for Newcastle

The sale of Newcastle United could have moved a step closer after a Malaysian consortium reportedly tabled an £80 million bid for the troubled club.

Newcastle Evening Chronicle reported the consortium, believed to include some of Malaysia’s well-known business leaders, were given a full tour of St James’ Park, the city and the training ground on Thursday by managing director Derek Llambias.

They made their way from the city to the training complex and then from Whitley Road to Benton Road to check out the club’s Academy.

"The group were given the full works around the stadium and at the training ground," a club insider said.

"They watched the players train and this proved a bit of distraction for a lot of them who are wondering what the heck is going on at Newcastle."

There was no official confirmation of the story, but with all interested parties having signed non-disclosure agreements, that came as no surprise.

However, there is a growing feeling that an end to a saga which has rumbled on for more than a month could be in sight.
