Roberto Donadoni axed as Napoli coach

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Struggling Napoli have sacked Roberto Donadoni and replaced him with former Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri.

Donadoni's future at Napoli has been the subject of intense speculation for the last few days after a poor run of form.

Napoli currently lie in 15th position in the Serie A standings having collected seven points from seven games, including four losses.

The Partenopei lost 2-1 at AS Roma on Sunday and club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has moved quickly to axe the former Italy coach and bring in Mazzarri as his replacement.

A statement from the club read: "Napoli announce they have released Roberto Donadoni from the role of head coach and appointed in his place Walter Mazzarri.

"The club want to thank Donadoni for the work done in these months and wish him the best of luck for the future."

Mazzarri, who left Sampdoria in the summer, is believed to have agreed a deal until 2011 with Napoli.
