The 24-year-old striker was present at the birth having remained with his wife at the hospital since their arrival at 10pm on Sunday.

The birth comes 17 months after childhood sweethearts Wayne and Coleen got married in the Italian resort of Portofino.

A spokesman for the Rooneys said yesterday: "Mother and baby are both absolutely fine.

"Wayne and Coleen are thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life."

According to The Sun, the tot's unusual name was picked by his proud mum Coleen.

Kai, the 68th most popular name for baby boys in the UK last year, has several different meanings around the world.

In Burma it means "unbreakable", in Nigeria it can mean "love", in Japan it translates to "the ocean" and in Chinese Mandarin it means "victory". In ancient Persian it meant "Great King" and in Scandinavia "keeper of the keys".
