Villarreal moved up to ninth in the table after a 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in a free-flowing encounter at El Madrigal.
Joan Capdevila put the home side ahead in the fifth minute before Igor Gabilondo equalised in the 24th minute with a long-range shot.
But Nilmar scored the winner on the stroke of half-time with a clinical run and finish from Rubén Cani's smart through ball.
Iker Muniain then won a penalty for Bilbao late on but Andoni Iraloa saw his spot-kick saved by Diego López.
Tempers flared toward the end of the game with Bilbao's Javi MartÃnez and Villarreal's Diego Godin sent off in injury time after clashing.
Bilbao coach JoaquÃn Caparrós was also dismissed in an ensuing altercation with Pablo Orbaiz, who was also sent off for elbowing Ariel Ibagaza.
