Ivica Olić earned Bayern Munich a 2-1 first-leg win as the Bundesliga outfit came from a goal down to snatch a 2-1 win over Manchester United.
United enjoyed a dream start in the Allianz Arena when Wayne Rooney scored for last season's runners-up with barely a minute on the clock.
But the Red Devils struggled thereafter and Bayern claimed a deserved 2-1 win through late goals from Franck Ribéry and Olić.
To compound United's misery Rooney hopped off at the end after Mario Gómez trod on his ankle in the build-up to Bayern's second goal.
