Aston Villa needed a second-half hat-trick from John Carew to win 4-2 at Reading and progress into the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Villa were trailing 2-0 at the break thanks to a Shane Long brace, but Ashley Young reduced the deficit within two minutes of the restart.

It was 2-2 in the 51st when Carew beat two defenders in the air to meet a cross from Stewart Downing and head home, and the Norwegian striker added the third six minutes later to put Villa ahead.

Carew then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after being felled in the area by Ívar Ingimarsson.
