England midfielder Gareth Barry is pleased with his recovery progress and remains hopeful of making the cut for the the World Cup.

The 29-year-old is having intense treatment on the ankle ligament injury he picked up in Manchester City's 0-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on May 5.

Barry, who did not join the provisional squad in Austria, is due to have another scan on Monday, which will determine whether he can make South Africa this summer.

He told City's official website: "The treatment on my ankle has been going well - I've been having regular sessions with the medical staff at Carrington, and they are pleased with how things are going.

"It's too early to assess just yet as to whether I'll make it, I'll just have to keep having the treatment and see how things go over the next week or so.

"But I'm feeling positive still and the medical staff are being brilliant - they are doing everything they can to help me."

Fabio Capello will announce his final 23-man party for the World Cup on June 1, and the Italian will give Barry every chance of getting fit before the deadline.
