Spanish champions Barcelona have announced that striker Thierry Henry will leave the club before the new season.

Henry will exit the Camp Nou with a year left on his contract following talks with Barça top brass.

The 32-year-old, who scored four goals in 15 starts last season, was reputedly one of the highest paid players in Pep Guardiola's squad and his departure will allow Barcelona to save money in the next financial year.

"It was a special position with the player and we have accepted," said Barcelona director general Joan Oliver.

"For Barça it is not a bad agreement because we avoid paying him next season."

Henry joined the Catalans from Arsenal in 2007 but, despite winning the Champions League in 2009 and two La Liga titles, he has not been able to replicate the form he showed in London.

The France international is now expected to follow David Beckham in crossing the Atlantic to play in the Major League Soccer next term.
