Yakubu makes bid for worst World Cup miss ever

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Yakubu's amazing miss for Nigeria has begged the question of whether it was one of the most glaring misses in World Cup history.

Trailing 2-1 to South Korea in Durban, Yakubu was set up with an absolutely glorious opportunity right in front of the goal.

With the keeper sprawled out beside him and a wide open net waiting to be fed the ball, the unmarked striker tried to flick the pass in for the astonishingly easy score and he put it wide of the post.

BBC pundit and former England striker Alan Shearer claimed it was the worst miss he had ever seen.

Yakubu then went on score a penalty, but as time ran out on Nigeria's tournament, the missed chance is the image most in focus.
