Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick as England overpowered Bulgaria 4-0 in the Three Lions' opening qualifier for the 2012 European Championship.

Defoe, who was initially ruled out of the match with a groin injury, made an instant impact after just three minutes at Wembley as he lashed home in clinical fashion after Ashley Cole's initial shot was parried by Nikolay Mihaylov.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker added another in the 61st minute when he rolled a finish under Mihaylov after a flowing move involving Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.

Substitute Adam Johnson scored England's third goal on 84 minutes before Defoe completed his treble two minutes later.
