The Manchester United midfielder set up an account on the popular social networking site at around lunchtime on Monday under the username @dgibbo28 - 28 being his shirt number at United.

United captain Rio Ferdinand confirmed it was real and urged his 842,000 followers to welcome his club-mate.

Instead the 23-year-old was greeted by some less-than-welcoming remarks, many of which appeared to be from United fans unhappy with his performances for the team this season.

Among the comments directed at him were:

"Nothing would make me happier than if we sold you this summer. You're probably a nice bloke, but an awful footballer."

"Team do all hard work keeping possession then you hit row Z every f****** time! #don'tshootyou'res***"

"You are an abysmal excuse for a footballer. You're a one trick pony — a s*** one at that. What Fergie sees in you I don't know."

"Your f***ing awful, get out of the club."

"You are s***, Fergie will sell you off in the summer. #justsaying"

The account was removed from the site 97 minutes later, although he did not say why.

"Darron Gibson says he came on to see what the lads were up to....he came off because he couldn't be bothered with it not any other reason," Ferdinand offered an explanation via Twitter.

However, scores of United fans have since leapt to the defence of Gibson and a #getgibboback hashtag has been created in an attempt to get the Derry-born player to return to the site.
