Champions League: Inter Milan 2-5 Schalke

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Schalke 04 twice came from behind to claim a stunning 5-2 victory over reigning champions Inter Milan in the first leg of their Champions league quarter-final at San Siro.

Dejan Stanković needed just 25 seconds to volley his side into the lead with a stunning hit from the centre circle, but Schalke were level in the 17th minute through Joël Matip.

Diego Milito scored his first Champions League goal of the season to fire Inter back in front in the 33rd minute, but Edu put Schalke back on level ground before the break.

Raul provided the turning point for Schalke after the restart when he finished low past Júlio César after good work by Jefferson Farfán, then Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia added to the hosts' woes with a costly own-goal just minutes later.

Inter's evening went from bad to worse when Cristian Chivu was sent off for a second bookable offense in the 62nd minute and with Nerazzuri's defense stretched to their limit, Edu added his second 15 minutes from time.
