Reigining champions Twente went into the game a point ahead of the second-placed Amsterdammers but could not secure the draw they required to retain the trophy.

A Siem de Jong goal and a Denny Landzaat own goal put Ajax 2-0 up before Theo Janssen reduced the deficit to set up a thrilling climax.

But a second De Jong goal made the game safe as Ajax secured their first Dutch title win since 2004.

"My first reaction after winning the title was that it was won with an Ajax philosophy," Ajax coach Frank de Boer told AD.

"It is a team full of young boys, almost all from our own youth academy, who dare to play.

"They have had to go through a number of ups and downs this season - but they have learned from each experience."

Ajax legend Johan Cruyff added in De Telegraaf: "It's a great start. There was a great atmosphere in the stadium to inspire the victory and all of this positivity can help open a new chapter for this proud club."

"The whole town, every Ajax fan yearned for the title," defender Toby Alderweireld told NUSport.

"There was no other option than to win. That feeling also lived in us."
