Goals at the end of each half from Mario Gómez gave Germany a 2-1 victory over Group A rivals Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadium.
Gómez fired the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time but Austria, whose qualification hopes are now all but over, were level after 50 minutes when German defender Arne Friedrich turned David Alaba's cross into his own net.
The game looked destined to end in a draw until Gómez popped up again in the closing seconds to nod home Philip Lahm's pinpoint cross.
