Casey Breese had been playing football with local boys at a recreation ground in Caersws, near Newtown, in Powys, on Friday when the accident happened.

It is believed he caught his foot in the net as he went to retrieve the ball and brought the goal crashing down on his neck.

Paramedics treated the boy at the scene and he was flown to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by air ambulance but pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

The goals used by Casey's Under-12s team at the ground in Caersws, Powys, are not full size. They were laid against spectator railings before being taken away for examination.

"The goalposts have been taken away by the police, who have also spoken with the other children and some adults who were in the area at the time," said a police spokesman.

"The children present have been affected by the incident and a specially-trained officer will be speaking with their families, and if necessary, further support will be put in place."

Police are continuing to investigate his death at the recreation ground where floral tributes have been left. A Manchester United top was also left as a tribute.
