The home side were gifted the lead in the 33rd minute when James McCarthy handled in the area and Heiðar Helguson converted the resulting penalty.

Mark Hughes' men then doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time with a magnificent free-kick from Buzsáky.

Steve Gohouri's trip on DJ Campbell gave QPR a dangerous free-kick 25 yards out and Buzsáky struck the ball with great whip and venom as the ball hit both posts before nestling in the back of the net.

A Hugo Rodallega free-kick pulled a goal back for Wigan before substitute Tommy Smith sealed QPR's win with a long-range effort.

Buzsáky received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Shaun Derry as QPR ran out comfortable winners.

Hughes told reporters: "Buzsáky is technically a good player and I've seen that technical ability and ability at set plays, and I felt that today would be a close game and we might need his ability at set plays. Thankfully that worked."
