Inter Milan failed to close the gap themselves on the European places after being held to a 0-0 draw at home by Atalanta.
The home side were given the chance to take the lead in the 22nd minute when referee Gabriele Gava pointed to the spot after Giampaolo Bellini had tangled with Giampaolo Pazzini in the area.
But Diego Milito's weak spot-kick saved by Andrea Consigli and Inter never looked like scoring after that.
