Television images showed Iranduba's midfielder Volante Derlan charged at the referee before throwing punches after being shown the red card.

Two riot police then took to the field and immediately subdued and arrested Derlan.

The referee showed the red card to Derlan after his assistant said the player made an impolite gesture toward the official after he was shown the yellow card.

Derlan could be suspended for up to 720 days for his tirade.
