La Liga: Real Madrid 3-1 Sporting Gijón

Sunday, April 15, 2012

Real Madrid remain four points ahead of rivals Barcelona after recording a hard-fought 3-1 victory against relegation-threatened Sporting Gijón at the Bernabéu.

The visitors took the lead on the half-hour when Miguel de las Cuevas scored from the penalty spot after Sergio Ramos was penalised for handball.

Gonzalo Higuaín leveled matters seven minutes later with a free header at the back post and Cristiano Ronaldo gave Madrid the lead 15 minutes from time when he powered home Ángel di María's cross.

Roberto Canella was dismissed for Sporting with 11 minutes remaining and it took the hosts just three minutes to make their man advantage count when Mesut Özil's exquisite through-ball was slotted home by Karim Benzema.
