The tweet, aimed at Massadio Haïdara, Moussa Sissoko, Papiss Cissé, and Vurnon Anita, featured pictures of three black stereotypes and one of Anita.

In addition to the controversial image, Taylor commented: "It's always good to see you guys smiling."

It was sent in response to an earlier messages from Haïdara, who teased Taylor about his attempts to learn French.

The 27-year-old then realised his stupidity and deleted his tweet, offering an apology to those who were offended.

Haidara also Tweeted shortly after, attempting to play down the situation.

However, Taylor could find himself in hot water with the FA, who have previously taken a hard line on players' behaviour on social media.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was fined £45,000 last year after referring to Ashley Cole as a "choc ice" on Twitter.
