Ruben Amorim ranked worst Man United manager of Premier League era
Ruben Amorim has officially gone down as the worst-performing Manchester United manager of the Premier League era, following his dismissal on Monday.

The stark statistic underlines just how far standards have slipped at Old Trafford since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, whose reign between 1986 and 2013 delivered an unprecedented period of dominance.

Under the legendary Scot, United won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues, whilst averaging an outstanding 2.01 points per game across 1,473 matches.

More than a decade on, United are still searching for a successor capable of restoring that level of success, and Amorim's spell has only deepened the sense of decline.

Amorim's Record the Worst Since Ferguson

Amorim, 40, leaves Old Trafford with the lowest points-per-game (PPG) record of any permanent United manager in the Premier League era.

Across 63 matches in all competitions, the Portuguese coach managed just 1.43 PPG, winning 24 games for an overall win rate of 38.1%.

In the league alone, he took charge of 47 matches, winning only 15, losing 19, and finishing with a win percentage of 31.9% - the worst of any United boss since 1992.

One of the most damaging moments of his tenure came in last season's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, a loss that cost United a return to the Champions League and the financial boost that comes with it.

Behind-the-Scenes Tensions Led to the Axe

Amorim's departure followed a public outburst in which he claimed he was being treated as a head coach rather than a manager, a role he believed he had been promised.

He also appeared to aim criticism at director of football Jason Wilcox after missing out on Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.

United's hierarchy were reportedly unhappy with Amorim's public criticism of players and internal processes, prompting a swift decision to part ways.

Post-Ferguson United: Managers Ranked by Points Per Game

Including interim spells, United have now had nine managers since Ferguson retired.

Whilst short caretaker tenures inflate some figures, the rankings still offer a sobering picture of the club's decline.

Manager Games Points Per Game
Michael Carrick 3 2.33
José Mourinho 114 1.97
Erik ten Hag 128 1.84
Ole Gunnar Solskjær 168 1.84
Louis van Gaal 103 1.81
Ryan Giggs 4 1.75
David Moyes 51 1.73
Ralf Rangnick 29 1.45
Ruben Amorim 63 1.43
To put those numbers in context, Ferguson's long-term average of 2.01 PPG remains untouchable.

Comparisons Make Grim Reading for Amorim

Amorim's record compares unfavourably even with short-term or much-criticised predecessors.

Ralf Rangnick won 10 of his 24 matches, whilst Erik ten Hag claimed victory in over 50% of his games.

José Mourinho remains the most successful post-Ferguson manager statistically, winning 53.8% of his matches.

Amorim also becomes just the third manager since Ferguson to fail to reach 50 games in charge, alongside David Moyes and Rangnick.

League Struggles Tell the Story

From Amorim's first match in charge to his final game, United ranked 14th in the Premier League, with Arsenal leading the table over the same period - a stark illustration of how far the club has fallen.

With Amorim gone, United are once again searching for the elusive figure capable of restoring the club to former glories - a task that has defeated every manager since Ferguson walked away from Old Trafford.
