Stockport scores bizarre own goal in wild 3-2 League One win vs Rotherham
Stockport County's League One clash with Rotherham United produced one of the most jaw-dropping moments of the season after goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe gifted the visitors a truly extraordinary own goal.

In scenes that left supporters stunned at Edgeley Park, Hinchliffe attempted to launch a quick long kick upfield to get Stockport on the front foot - only to smash the ball straight into team-mate Joe Olowu.

The ricochet looped painfully back towards goal, leaving the keeper helpless as it bounced into the net.

Despite the calamity, Stockport held their nerve to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory, in a match packed with goals, controversy and no fewer than three own goals.

A Game of Chaos: Three Own Goals and Five Goals Total

Stockport initially took the lead in the 13th minute in fitting fashion - through an own goal at the other end.

Rotherham defender Sean Raggett diverted a low cross into his own net to put the hosts ahead.

But the match will be remembered for what happened just before the interval.

With Stockport still in front, Hinchliffe looked to kick-start an attack quickly, but his rushed clearance slammed into Olowu's back and ballooned over him into the net - an error that instantly went viral and had even neutral fans wincing.

Stockport regained control in the second half after another bizarre moment saw Rotherham keeper Cameron Dawson involved in the match's third own goal, putting County back in front at 2-1.

The game remained breathless right to the finish.

Sam Nombe struck to keep Rotherham in it, before Benony Breki Andresson completed the scoring in a five-goal thriller as Stockport edged the points.

Dave Challinor: "We Were Affected Too Much"

After the match, Stockport boss Dave Challinor admitted his players were shaken by the freak nature of the goal, and he was more frustrated by their reaction than the mistake itself.
We started the game really well and got ourselves in front.

Then we are affected miles too much by a crazy decision and a freak incident that not many, or if any, people will have seen before. That happens.

I'm more displeased with our reaction to that. We went into our shells a little bit.
Whilst Hinchliffe's own goal will dominate the headlines, Stockport will ultimately take confidence from finding a way to win in chaotic circumstances - the kind of result that can define a promotion push.

And for Rotherham, it was another punishing afternoon where even the game's strangest moment still wasn't enough to salvage anything from the trip.
