Arsenal captain Cesc Fàbregas scored a brace in a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough to confirm their place in next season’s Champions League and dump Boro further into the relegation mire.

Fàbregas, who had only scored once all season prior to this, fired the hosts in front on 26 minutes when he accepted a flick from Nicklas Bendtner and set Andrei Arshavin on his way before drilling his shot past Brad Jones from the return ball, although replays showed Bendtner was off-side.

Jérémie Aliadière wasted a decent chance to embarrass his former club when he found himself clear of the Arsenal defence but shot straight at Manuel Almunia five minutes after the break.

The Gunners increased the lead in the 68th minute when Jones rushed out to close down Fàbregas, but was promptly rounded before the Spaniard slotted the ball into an empty net.
