Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Barcelona defender Rafael Márquez is set to be sidelined for up to 10 weeks after suffering a knee injury during his team's 0-0 draw with Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday.

The Mexican was hurt in the 50th minute while bringing the ball into the Chelsea half of the pitch with no opposition players in close attendance.

He was taken off the field on a stretcher an early assessment from the Barcelona medical staff has indicated meniscus damage in the left knee.

"Rafa's loss was the worst news today," Barça coach Pep Guardiola said.

That means Márquez will play no further part this season, while further tests will be carried out on Wednesday.
