Champions League Group C: Man United 3-3 Basel

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Manchester United threw away a two-goal before Ashley Young salvaged a point in a six-goal thriller against FC Basel at Old Trafford.

Danny Welbeck's early brace looked to have set the Red Devils on their way to a comfortable success.

But United, who had looked shaky at the back all night, were opened up after the interval with Fabian Frei smashing home in the 58th minute before Alexander Frei put the finishing touch to a sweeping move from the Swiss side just two minutes later.

And the visitors astonishingly took the lead 14 minutes from time as Phil Jones' dreadful pass led to Antonio Valencia giving away a penalty with Alexander stepped up to gleefully smash home

United probed frantically for the equaliser and it came in the 90th minute courtesy of a close-range Young header from substitute Nani's cross.
