Ben Watson put the Latics ahead from the penalty spot on 11 minutes after Matt Mills handled inside the area.

Powell then doubled the advantage with an outrageous overhead kick in the 24th minute.

Callum McManaman laid the ball into the box where Chris McCann hit a weak shot which deflected off a Bolton defender and into the air.

Showing fantastic technique, Powell threw himself at the airbound ball and acrobatically converted an overhead kick into the top right corner, leaving Andy Lonergan stranded.

Bolton soon pulled level through Neil Danns and an André Moritz penalty, only for McManaman to hit home the game's winning goal in the 68th minute.

"I've been very impressed with Nick," Wigan boss Uwe Rösler said afterwards. "He has enormous energy around him and the fitness to stretch an opposition over the whole 90 minutes.

"His goal was tremendous, and speaks volumes of the talent he has."
