Wesley Sneijder 39

Wesley Sneijder struck the only goal of the match to give under-fire Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster some breathing space with a much-needed victory over Recreativo Huelva.

At the start of the week, Schuster received a vote of confidence from sporting director Predrag Mijatović.

But, despite their troubles, the champions managed to snatch a half-time lead on 39 minutes when Sneijder, who had earlier seen a goal disallowed, drilled in a 25-yard thunderbolt which took a slight deflection and looped over Asier Riesgo.

Real's quest for a much-needed second goal was badly hit as Gonzalo Higuaín, who leads the team with nine goals, was carried off on a stretcher in the 75th minute with a serious looking injury.

The hosts had a few scares at the other end as Recreativo pressed for an equalizer, but Schuster's men managed to hold out for what could be an important victory.

The victory moved Real within two points of leaders Barcelona, which plays Getafe on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Villarreal's unbeaten league record was undone by a shock 3-0 home defeat to Valladolid, while Sevilla and Valencia played out a 0-0 draw.
