Chelsea preparing £40m bid for David Villa

Friday, April 10, 2009

Chelsea are set to test Valencia’s financial position by making an astonishing £40 million bid for striker David Villa.

After a couple of relatively austere summers, it is believed Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants to make a high-profile signing, to re-emphasise his commitment to the Stamford Bridge cause, The Guardian reports.

Valencia are known to have been in dire financial difficulties, at one stage struggling to pay their players, although in his statement, Villa suggested those troubles were easing.

Villa himself has previously claimed he intended to see out the remainder of his contract at the Mestalla, which does not expire until 2014.

But Valencia's financial crisis is forcing them to sell their star players this summer and, with the future beyond this summer of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka uncertain, Abramovich's offer may be too good to resist.
