Premier League round-up: Newcastle boost survival hopes

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Newcastle United hauled themselves out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough in Tyne-Tees derby at St James' Park.

It was Newcastle's first home win since December 21 and just their second anywhere in 18 attempts.

The match exploded into life and it was the visitors who opened the scoring after just three minutes when the unfortunate Habib Beye bundled the ball into his own net after goalkeeper Steve Harper had blocked Tuncay Şanlı's close-range shot.

The luck had deserted them for the goal and it was not doing them any favours three minutes later as former Boro hero Mark Viduka hit the frame of the goal before Steven Taylor lashed at the rebound.

But on nine minutes, Taylor met Danny Guthrie’s corner at the near post and powered home a header past Brad Jones.

And it was Obafemi Martins' arrival as a 70th-minute substitute for Michael Owen which proved the turning point as the Nigerian striker put the Magpies in front within a minute of entering the fray.

Viduka headed on a high ball past Kevin Nolan and Martins found a yard to slide the ball into the corner before taking off on a run down the touchline and jumping all over his boss Alan Shearer.

Then another sub, Peter Løvenkrands, made the points safe as he crashed home from close range three minutes from time.
