Premier League round-up: Newcastle relegated after 16 years

Table of Contents
Newcastle United were relegated from the Premier League after 16 years in the top flight following a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

A draw would have kept the Magpies in the Premier League - with fellow relegation candidates Hull City losing at home to Manchester United - but they could not even manage that.

Newcastle had a brief period in the first half which offered hope, as Carlos Cuéllar cleared off the line from Steven Taylor before Obafemi Martins blazed over from 12 yards.

Then news came through from Hull that United were ahead and Newcastle were set to preserve their stay in top flight if they could at least hold on in the Midlands.

The euphoria, though, did not last long as Villa took the lead in the 38th minute. The Newcastle defense could only half-clear a corner and Gareth Barry fired in a powerful strike which took a huge deflection off the stand-in left-back Damien Duff to wrong-foot Steve Harper and find the bottom corner of the net.

David Edgar was sent off in injury-time for a second bookable offence, and, at that point, the Toon faithful knew it was all over.
