Brazil maintained their place at the summit of the qualifying section and move a step closer to a place at the 2010 World Cup after beating Paraguay 2-1 at the Estádio do Arruda in Recife.

Brazil dominated possession, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 26th minute as Salvador Cabañas saw his free-kick deflected off Elano and past Júlio César.

The five-time world champions equalised five minutes before the break when Daniel Alves crossed to the back post where Robinho volleyed home from close range.

The winner came four minutes into the second-half when Nilmar bundled the ball home from close range.

Substitute Alexandre Pato missed a glaring opportunity in the closing stages when he shot wide when the goal was at his mercy.
