Arsène Wenger compares Jack Wilshere to Wayne Rooney

Friday, August 7, 2009

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has revealed that his teenage sensation Jack Wilshere reminds him of young Wayne Rooney.

At 17 years old, Wilshere is already Arsenal's youngest Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League player.

While Wenger sees similarities between Wilshere and Rooney, who hit the headlines as a 16-year-old at Everton, the Frenchman has been keen to temper the hype surrounding the youngster.

Speaking at the launch of Arsenal's £500,000 charity initiative for Great Ormond Street Hospital, Wenger said: "Jack reminds me a bit of Rooney when he started, in his belief and his positive attitude to go forwards.

"For the rest, he has still a lot to learn, relations with other players team-wise, but there are some great basics there.

"But as a manager you do not want a guy to be a star before he has delivered, and maybe here that is more difficult than anywhere else."

However, when asked whether he thought Wilshere will be called up for England's seniors, Wenger replied: "You should ask that question to (Fabio) Capello.

"But I believe they will leave him out of the national team at the moment."
