Sunderland continued a woeful run of only one win in the past two months after a 2-0 defeat to resurging Everton at Goodison Park.
Everton broke the deadlock after seven minutes when Marouane Fellaini's driven cross was glanced into the corner by Tim Cahill.
And the lead was increased twelve minutes later as Landon Donovan latched onto Cahill's knock down before firing a low left-footed shot past Craig Gordon.
