Sevilla interim coach Antonio Álvarez was unable to bring about an immediate improvement as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Villarreal.
Villarreal was 2-0 up after Giuseppe Rossi poked a bouncing ball past goalkeeper Andrés Palop in the fifth minute and Joseba Llorente headed a cross under Palop 13 minutes later.
The home side put the seal on the victory in injury time when Rossi's ball set substitute Robert Pires free and he outstripped the defence before firing low past Palop.
