Aston Villa improved their chances of clinching a Champions League spot for next season with a controversial 1-0 win over bitter West Midlands foes Birmingham City.

With neither side looking likely to make the breakthrough, Villa were handed a penalty kick in the 83rd minute after Roger Johnson had been adjudged to have brought down Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Several Birmingham players argued with referee Martin Atkinson that Johnson had played the ball first but the official gave the spot-kick, which James Milner drove home.
