Darren Bent bagged a brace then missed two penalties as Sunderland put a dent in his former club Tottenham Hotspur's top-four hopes with a 3-1 win at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland opened the scoring after just 32 seconds as Bent tapped home the rebound after Gomes had parried Frazier Campbell's header.

Bent got a second from the spot after Kyle Walker's handball but then saw another spot-kick saved by Gomes before half-time after Campbell had been fouled.

After the break, Bent was given a third chance to get his hat-trick when Wilson Palacios hacked down David Meyler, but astonishingly Gomes was up to the task yet again, saving to his left.

The visitors took advantage of several reprieves to get back into the game with 18 minutes to go when Peter Crouch rose well to head home Niko Kranjčar's cross, but Boudewijn Zenden made certain of the points four minutes from time with a stunning volley into the top corner.
