Villarreal provisionally moved into the top six after a 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid at El Madrigal.
Defender Diego Godín's first-time backheel from a corner put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute before Giuseppe Rossi increased the lead when he poked the ball in following a goalmouth scramble just before the break.
Atlético pulled a goal back through Sergio Agüero midway through the second half, but the Rojiblancos could not find an equaliser and remained in 10th position in the table.
