World Cup 2010 Group C: Slovenia 0-1 England

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

England's World Cup dream lives on as they beat Slovenia 1-0 in Port Elizabeth and progress to the last 16 of the tournament.

The crucial goal arrived on 22 minutes when James Milner delivered a superb cross from the right wing and Jermain Defoe slipped in front of his marker to fire home past Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic.

The misery for Slovenia was then completed at the final whistle when the news came through that a last-gasp United States winner over Algeria had eliminated them from the competition.

Slovenia: Samir Handanovič; Mišo Brečko, Marko Šuler, Boštjan Cesar, Bojan Jokić; Valter Birsa, Robert Koren, Aleksander Radosavljevič, Andraž Kirm (Tim Matavž, 79); Zlatan Ljubijankič (Zlatko Dedič, 62), Milivoje Novakovič

England: David James; Glen Johnson, Matthew Upson, John Terry, Ashley Cole; Gareth Barry; James Milner, Frank Lampard; Steven Gerrard; Jermain Defoe (Emile Heskey, 86), Wayne Rooney (Joe Cole, 72)
