Cristiano Ronaldo gains 10m Facebook fans

Table of Contents
Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has hit 10 million fans on Facebook and in doing so made history by becoming the first non-US personality ever to achieve that kind of success on the social networking site.

Ronaldo’s fame also makes him by far the most popular sports person on Facebook of any nation, with more than double the fans of Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, the next most popular, according to social media statistics service Famecount.com.

This achievement is all the more remarkable for the fact that the Real Madrid ace plays in a sport with little US profile, drawing a fan base largely outside the US.

"I would like to thank all of my fans for the support on Facebook. Today we crossed 10 million. It is an honor to share this with you all," Ronaldo wrote on the wall of his official Facebook page.

Other non-US stars that aren't at 10 million but getting close to make the milestone within the next few weeks include Dr. House from US medical series House and Canadian teenage pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Across Facebook overall, Ronaldo becomes the 18th entity to reach the 10 million milestone, with the leading the pack are popular Facebook game Texas Hold ‘em on over 22 million fans.
