Premier League: Newcastle 6-0 Aston Villa

Newcastle United won for the first time back in the Premier League with a 6-0 thumping over managerless Aston Villa at a packed St James' Park.

The visitors started brightly and could have taken a 10th minute lead when Ashley Young was felled by Steve Harper in the box, but John Carew blasted the resulting penalty effort high over the bar.

The miss proved costly as just two minutes later Joey Barton put Newcastle ahead with a stunning 25-yard opener past Brad Friedel.

Chris Hughton's men doubled the lead just after the hour mark as Andy Carroll nodded José Enrique's cross to Kevin Nolan and after his first header was saved by Friedel, the Toon skipper snapped up the rebound.

It was 3-0 on 33 minutes. Mike Williamson headed down a Barton corner and after Richard Dunne fluffed his clearance, Carroll was on hand to thump a left-foot drive home.

Williamson was again involved for the fourth in the 67th minute, winning possession on the egde of the box before teeing up Carroll to clinically fire home.

Nolan bravely hooked in a fifth from inside the six-yard area three minutes before time before Carroll completed his hat-trick with virtually the last kick of the game.
