Shakhtar Donetsk progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history after defeating AS Roma 3-0 on home soil.

Leading 3-2 from the first leg in Italy, the Ukrainian champions opened the scoring in the 18th minute as Tomáš Hübschman got the faintest of touches to flick home a whipped cross from Willian.

The visitors should have given themselves a lifeline when was adjudged to have pulled Marco Borriello's shirt inside the area, but the striker's spot-kick was stopped by goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov's dive to his left.

Roma's hopes suffered a further blow four minutes before the interval when Philippe Mexès was given a second yellow card for a needless challenge on Luiz Adriano.

Willian then curled home a third on 58 minutes before a neat finish from Eduardo in the 87th minute rounded off an impressive victory for Shakhtar.
