The visitors were frustrated for large parts of their trip to South Wales as they found Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall in fine form.

The 28-year-old denied Roberto Soldado on numerous occasions, while also thwarting Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, and Gylfi Sigurðsson.

It therefore felt all to cruel as André Villas-Boas' side finally broke the deadlock in stoppage time.

Substitute Erik Lamela received a pass from Lewis Holtby before playing a low cross into the six-yard box.

Paulinho was there when it mattered to turn it home with the back of his heel and send the travelling Spurs fans into raptures.

"I'm delighted because we played so well and it was important to get the three points," Paulinho told Spurs TV.

"It's my first goal in the Premier League and I want to say thanks to everyone. I'm so happy."
