Footballer arrested after brutally elbowing opponent in Welsh non-league match
A footballer has been caught appearing to elbow an opponent in the face during a non-league match in Wales - an alarming incident that has sparked widespread outrage online and led to an arrest.

Footage filmed from the touchline shows a Trearddur Bay player striking a Porthmadog player off the ball, moments before a penalty was taken during an Ardal North West League fixture.

The video has since gone viral on social media, racking up hundreds of thousands of views and prompting calls for severe punishment.

Video goes viral as fans demand action

The clip was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by James Roberts, who described the incident as "absolutely disgusting" and claimed the player "should get banned for life."

Roberts also alleged match officials were shown the video but were unable to take retrospective action during the game.

The apparent elbow took place as Porthmadog were preparing to take a penalty, in a match that later became increasingly fractious, with reports of delays, bad fouls and off-the-ball incidents contributing to a lengthy period of added time.

Trearddur Bay suspend and then release player

Trearddur Bay FC confirmed that player Tom Taylor was suspended with immediate effect after the incident, with the club stating it would not comment further whilst the matter is under police investigation.

In a later update, the club said Taylor had been released following an emergency general meeting, adding an apology to the opposition player, match officials, supporters and the wider football community.

Police arrest man on suspicion of assault

North Wales Police confirmed they are investigating and that a 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

In a statement, the force said officers were "aware of a video circulating online" relating to an incident during the match and urged the public not to speculate whilst enquiries continue.

Porthmadog player suffered concussion

Porthmadog later said winger Danny Brookwell had suffered concussion and was forced to leave the field after receiving treatment.

The club stressed that its "major concern" was the welfare of the player.

Despite the viral flashpoint, reports indicate the referee did not issue a red card during the match, which ended in a 3-2 win for Porthmadog.

FAW aware and reviewing incident

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is also understood to be aware of the footage and reviewing the incident, with the match taking place in the third tier of Welsh football, which falls under FAW jurisdiction.

With a police investigation now under way, further disciplinary action could follow from football authorities depending on the outcome of enquiries.
