Cristian Noboa 89

Substitute Cristian Noboa scored in the 89th minute for Ecuador to rescue a 1-1 draw with Brazil in Quito.

The home side dominated the match with a very offensive approach as Brazil looked lackluster after arriving in the Andean capital just hours before the game, an attempt to counteract the affects of altitude at 9,000 feet above sea level.

Ecuadorian midfielder Antonio Valencia hit the post in a long-distance effort before Felipe Caicedo fired inches wide of Júlio César's left post.

Brazil were made to sweat by a much superior Ecuador side but they managed to hang on to enter the half-time break without having conceded a goal.

The Ecuadorians continued to press in the second-half, and a Cristian Benítez drive almost crept into the right side of the goal.

After completely being outplayed by a determined Ecuador outfit, the five-time world champions began to come more into the match.

In the 72nd minute Júlio Baptista replaced the ineffective Ronaldinho, and within seconds from entering the field the former Real Madrid striker gave Brazil an unlikely lead with a shot that deflected off the post and goalkeeper José Cevallos on its way in.

Luís Fabiano almost increased the lead but saw his effort hit the angle of the right post.

It seemed that Brazil were on the verge of picking up an unlikely victory, but Ecuador salvaged a point with Noboa's late equaliser. The substitute, who came in for Joffre Guerron in the 74th minute, pounced on a rebound after a Benítez effort was parried by César.

Benítez could have won it for Ecuador in injury time but César foiled him again.
