Former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makélélé announced on Thursday that he will retire from football at the end of the season.

The Paris St Germain skipper told TV station France 2 of his decision after reports that he had been offered a one-year playing extension to his deal at the Parc des Princes with an offer to take a backroom role after that campaign was up.

"I’ve decided that this will be my last year," Makélélé said when asked if he would continue at the Ligue 1 club.

The 37-year-old had previously hinted that he may continue, depending on the club’s ambitions.

He added: "I’ve decided to make this statement to end the charade surrounding my actions.

"Today, in agreement with the club president, I have decided not to continue my contract beyond May 16."
