The 36-year-old was playing for Brazilian side Botafogo against Madureira and scored the winning goal before being substituted late on.

Basically, the referee instructed Seedorf to exit the pitch on the near side to save the time, but instead he headed across the pitch to the Botafogo bench.

The referee took umbrage, booked Seedorf for his insolence and then flashed a second yellow when the former Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan star continued to disobey orders.

"He (the referee) told me to get off the pitch there. How can I not get off here?" Seedorf said after the match, pointing to the area where he left the field.

"I'm not going to say anymore right now. I don't understand what happened."

The Dutchman had only once before been sent off in his professional career. He was shown red for slapping a Messina player while playing for Milan in April 2006.
