Oldham Athletic supporters embraced their traditional fancy dress outing by donning butcher costumes at Forest Green Rovers - the world's first vegan football club.

In the viral picture, the group are sporting white butchers' coats and striped aprons, carrying toy cows and strings of fake sausages.

The match, which took place last Saturday, was Oldham's final away fixture of the National League season, and it has long been a Latics tradition to wear fancy dress for the occasion.

And this year's costume theme playfully referenced Forest Green's well-known vegan ethos.

One fan, who preferred not to be named, explained to The Oldham Times that the outfits were worn in good humour with no intention to offend.
It's a tradition to go in fancy dress to the final away game of the season, so as Forest Green is a vegan football club, we thought it would be a laugh to go dressed as butchers.

Their fans all saw the funny side of it and were even asking for selfies with us in the fan-zone before the game.
Despite the light-hearted gesture, Oldham lost the game 1-0.

Forest Green's chairman, eco-entrepreneur Dale Vince, also saw the funny side, posting a video on X (formerly Twitter) captioned: "Vegans 1 - 0 Butchers".

Forest Green Rovers: Leading the Way in Sustainable Football

Forest Green, based in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, are widely regarded as the world's greenest football club.

They have been recognised by the United Nations for their efforts towards sustainability, including:
  • A fully vegan matchday menu
  • An organic, rainwater-recycling pitch
  • Group travel for away fans to cut emissions
  • No single-use plastics on site
Whilst Oldham fans brought a slice of humour to the matchday, Forest Green's environmental mission remains a serious, globally recognised effort to change football for the better.
