Liverpool, Atlético reach Champions League group phase

Five-time European champion Liverpool struggled to reach the Champions League group phase after a late goal in extra time gave them a 1-0 aggregate victory over Standard Liege.

Dirk Kuyt scored the only goal in the 118th minute, just two minutes before the match would have headed to penalties.

Atlético Madrid squeezed German side Schalke 04 4-1 on aggregate after beating them 4-0 at Vicente Calderón.

Sergio Agüero, Olympic gold medal winner with Argentina, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before Diego Forlán, Luis García and Maxi Rodríguez sealed the victory in the second half.

Schalke's misery was complete when Christian Pander, who scored their only goal in Gelsenkirchen, was sent off for fouling Simão.

Two goals from Olympique Marseille striker Mamadou Niang secured a 3-1 aggregate win over SK Brann after beating the Norwegians 2-1 at Stade Vélodrome.

Greek champion Olympiakos Piraeus will have to settle for the UEFA Cup after they could not overturn their stunning 3-0 defeat to Anorthosis Famagusta in the first leg.

Danish champion Aalborg repeated its 2-0 victory over FBK Kaunas as Kasper Risgård scored twice to advance 4-0 on aggregate.

Fenerbahçe was the only Turkish side to progress, defeating Partizan Belgrade 2-1 to give them a 4-3 aggregate win, while Galatasaray are out with a 3-2 overall defeat by Steaua Bucharest.

Belarus will have its first representative in the group stage as BATE Borisov held on for a 1-1 draw at home to Levski Sofia, giving them a 2-1 aggregate win.

Dinamo Kiev repeated its 4-1 victory over Spartak Moscow, Shakhtar Donetsk beat Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 to go through 5-1 on aggregate, while FC Basel progressed into the group stages by beating Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães 2-1 at home and 3-1 on aggregate.
